Marguerite Lillian MacDonald Obituary
Marguerite Lillian "Greta" MacDonald, age 85 of the Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow and formerly of MacInnis Way, West River, Antigonish County passed away Tuesday, September 13th at the Aberdeen Hospital in New, Glasgow.
Born in Sydney, NS she was the daughter of the late Colin and Margaret (MacGillivray) MacNeil of South River Road.
Greta was educated at Mount St. Bernard in Antigonish and attained her accounting and secretarial diplomas from St. Joseph's Convent in Mabou, Inverness County. Over the years she worked as an accountant and secretary for MacDonald Brothers on Main St. in Antigonish. She was a member of the St. Joseph's CWL in St. Joseph's for over 50, years.
She was a wonderful wife and mother and a friend to all who knew her. Greta had a cheerful spirit and was always recognized for her spontaneous and exuberant laughter. At home she immersed herself in her garden, which always overflowed with life and color. She also looked after her husband Gerry who suffered from Multiple Sclerosis who passed away on February, 1st, 2005.
Greta is survived by her son Gerard, Antigonish; sister, Lorraine (David) Colton Lowell Mass, USA; Brother, Roy (Nora) MacNeil, Dartmouth; sisters-in-law, Anna MacDonald, North Grant, Glenda MacNeil, South River Road and Carmel Richard, Toronto; brother-in-law, Robert (Lucy) MacDonald, Truro.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Charles "Gerry" MacDonald; brother Alvin MacNeil; sister Caroline Sturgis (Art), South Carolina USA; brothers-in-law Donald Richard and Joe MacDonald; sisters-in-law Katherine MacFarlane and Lucy MacDonald.
At Greta's request, there will be no visitation. Funeral Mass will be held 11:00am Thursday, September 22nd in Saint Ninian Cathedral, Antigonish with Fr. Danny MacLennan presiding. Cremation to follow with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, St. Josephs at a later date.
Memorial Donations in Greta's Memory may be made to the Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow or CACL Antigonish. The family would like to thank the staff at the Glen Haven Manor in New Glasgow for the fantastic professional help and love they gave Greta while she was a resident there since Nov 2021. Also, a thank you to Rev. Tom MacNeil, Doctor Gregor MacLean, and staff at the Aberdeen Hospital for the quick care and attention given her while a patient there.
