He was predeceased by: his wife Mina Starkes; his parents, Edwin Starkes and Bella Starkes; his parents-in-law, Job Starkes and Mary Starkes; and his siblings, Grace Randell (Claude) and Malcolm Starkes (Doris).

He is survived by: his children, Shirley Starkes (Brian Eveleigh), Robert Starkes (Leatrice), Dean Starkes and Larry Starkes (Lisa); his grandchildren, Brent Starkes (Eva Ping), Kelly MacLean (Brad), Nicole Starkes (Kris Heintz), Kirk Starkes (Jenelle Pardy) and Kendra Starkes; and his great grandchildren, Landon MacLean and Cameron Heintz.
