He was predeceased by: his parents, Douglas Matthews and Lucy Matthews; his brothers, Steven and William Matthews; his brothers-in-law, Francis Hearn, Harvey Fancey and Robert Hounsell; and his son-in-law Perry Cook.

He is survived by: his wife Eliza; his children, Linda Cook and Roger (Gloria); his siblings, Catherine Hearn, Donna Fancy (Vince Stuckless), Beatrice West (Morris), Pearl Sparkes (Cecil), Jethro (Verna), Clayton (Dallis) and Gerald (Emma); his sister-in-law Jackie Matthews; his grandchildren, Natasha Matthews (Steven Baker), Dillon Cook (Alyssa Norris), Christopher Matthews (Kimberly) and Candace Cook (Kevin Pickett); and his great grandchildren, Alexis Croucher, Liberty Croucher, Destiney Pickett, Noah Pickett, Jayden Cook and Olivia Cook. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
