He was predeceased by: his parents, Sandy Hynes and Elizabeth Hynes; and his fathers-in-law, Marcel Noel, Robert Green, Ward Allen and Bill Hicks.

He is survived by: his wife Dianne; his son Craig Hynes (Lori); his grandchildren, Brendan and Tate; his daughters, Denise Monk (Tony) and Shelly McCarthy (Frank); his grandchildren, Alichia, Frankie, Sonya Philpott (Fred), Kristin and Emily; his siblings, Rona Noel, Marina Allen, Joan Greene, Doris Hicks, Alice Kelley, Audrey (Keith Kilpatrick), Harvey Hynes (Betty), Don (Joyce), Max Hynes, Gerald Hynes and Wayne Hynes; and his mother-in-law Alice Flynn. He is also survived by nephews, nieces, other relatives and many friends.

As expressions of sympathy, flowers are accepted or memorial donations in memory of Merle can be made to the Children's Wish Foundation.
