He was predeceased by: his parents, William Whalen and Olive Whalen; and his in-laws, Peter and Rita Noseworthy. He is survived by: his sisters, Elizabeth and Edith; his siblings-in-law, Alice Whalen and Robert Kennedy; his wife Rosemarie Whelan; his children, John Jr. (Michelle), Shawn (Holly) and Darlene; his grandchildren, Brandon, Haley (Jeff), Claire (Dylan), Naomi and Leia; his great grandchildren, Rosie and Eric; his siblings, Bill, Harold and Winnie; his brothers-in-law, Rusty (Bev), Peter (Marg) and Marvin Whalen; and his cousin Scott Whalen.

Visitation was held on Monday, November 25th 2024 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, on Tuesday, November 26th 2024 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Broughton's Funeral Home (17 Station Rd, Brigus, NL A0A 1K0). A funeral service was held on Wednesday, November 27th 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Broughton's Chapel (17 Station Rd, Brigus, NL A0A 1K0).
