He was predeceased by: his parents, John Hyum and Dorothy Van Hyum; and his brother Brian Van Hyum. He is survived by: his wife Mary Ann; his children, Juanita Sturgeon and Owen Sturgeon (Tanya); his grandchildren, Tyler (Kayla), Brittney (Mason) and Colton; his great grandchildren, Skyler, Wyatt, Memphis, Maddox and Waylon; and his aunt Nienke.
