He was predeceased by: his parents, Cornelis Schell (Carl) of Rotterdam and Isabella Schell (Hammond) of Saint John; and his siblings, Ruth and Don. He is survived by: his wife Pat; his daughters, Robyn (Richard Poole), Wendy (Edmonton), Julie (Berry Mills) and Nancy (Martinon); his sister June; and his grandchildren, Tyson, Jarrett, Emilienne, Benjamin, Cory, Mallory and Julian.

Donations in Carl's memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Society of New Brunswick.

“We were sorry to hear of carl's passing. We had the pleasure of working out with carl in saint john in the early 80s. He had a big influence on our judo careers. I worked with him on the board of judo n.b, when he was the president and my husband and i both worked out at shimpokai for a couple of years when we first got married. His brand of judo is still recognizable today in judoka who had the opportunity to learn from him and who have gone on to teach judo. Mike and glenna hetherington”
