He was predeceased by: his mother Muriel Mawhinney (Richardson); and his sister Jennifer March (Mawhinney). He is survived by: his wife Brenda Mawhinney-Riverview (Colpitts); his father James Gordon Mawhinney-Riverview; his siblings, Gordon (Cynthia), Saint John and Jane Franklin (Nick); and his pets, Bella and Cadbury. He is also survived by many brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations in Joel's memory could be made to the Moncton SPCA or the Hope for Wildlife in Nova Scotia.
