He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Garland and Neta Garland (Bannister); his son Christopher; and his brothers, Curtis, David and James.

He is survived by: his wife Pauline (Vacheresse); his son Joey (Kristy); his siblings, Edward (Elaine), Gerald (Mary), Richard (Marilyn), Austin, Robert (Kim), Ralph (Brenda), Anna Linkletter, Elsie Steeves, Eileen Garland and Aleta Sabean (Curly); his grandchildren, Liam and Vera; and his sister-in-law Kathleen Smith (Dennis). He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
