He was predeceased by: his parent William Black; his brother Ron; and his siblings-in-law, Ken Kirke (Ruth), Joe Chapman (Jean) and André Hay (Bill).

He is survived by: his parent Georgie Black (Wilson); his wife Irene Black (Chapman); his sons, Brian and David; his sister Ruth Kirke; his siblings-in-law, Bill Hay, Evie Black and Jean Chapman; and his nieces and nephews, Dawn Somers, Heather Thurber, Jackie Lemon, Lynn Reade, Leslie Kirke, Gayle Hay, Bill Black, Jeff Kirke, David Hay and Mark Chapman.

A founding member of the Moncton Hospital Foundation as well as Chairman of the Moncton Hospital Board, he held leadership positions on boards of the YMCA, the Red Shield Appeal, NB Nursing Association, Moncton Community Living, the Alzheimer's Association, Moncton Headstart and many other charities.
