He was predeceased by: his parents, William James and Mary Elizabeth (Haley); his daughter Mary Joanne Gillis; his siblings, William "Bill", Robert "Bob" and Elizabeth "Bessie"; and his siblings-in-law, Betty Godin and Brian Dunn.

He is survived by: his wife Alice Marie (Dunn) of Moncton; his son Jim Gillis (Sheri) of Wellington, NS; his grandchildren, Haley Gillis of Moncton, Henry Gillis (Amanda) of Fall River, NS and Rowan Gillis of Wellington, NS; and his sisters-in-law, Aurelia Coughlan and Bonnie Waye (Kenny). He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and extended family.
