Leslie Errol Gillies Obituary
After a life well lived, we sadly announce the passing of Les Gillies of Moncton. He was born September 17, 1934, in Petitcodiac, NB, the son of the late Tina and Errol Gillies. Les was the oldest of 5 boys; he is survived by his brothers Rae (Carol died 2023) and Don (Carolyn died 1989), predeceased by his brothers Roy and Lloyd, along with stepmother Fran.
He will be fondly remembered by his children Lynn Baldwin, Bob (Lori) and Peter (Lorna), as well as his grandchildren: Jack (Sophie), Anna, Leah, Rachel, Nicholas, Noah and Andre. He is also survived by Kathryn Gillies, the mother of his children, sisters-in-law Donna and Joan Gillies, Pat Russell and many nieces and nephews.
Over the years, Les had many hobbies and made many lifelong friends. Snowmobiling in Albert County, fishing on the Miramichi River, hiking, photography, and genealogy were his favourites. He was a lifelong member of the Moncton Outdoor Enthusiasts, where he led many hikes throughout Eastern Canada. He was particularly proud of hiking the Long Range Traverse in Gros Morne National Park. Every trip was an adventure with never a dull moment; the more remote and gruelling, the more he enjoyed the trip. Les cherished his time with the different groups; he always spoke of great times shared with friends. His stories were legendary!
Dad will always be remembered for being extremely generous with his time. He knew how to fix everything from your leaking basement to your home computer and was always happy to help rescue a friend.
Les spent most of his career working for Irving Oil as a Senior Manager since the early 1960s, operating from offices in Moncton and Saint John while overseeing projects across the province. He was very dedicated to his work and had the respect of everyone he was associated with.
There will be a celebration of his life at Fergusons Funeral Home on 1657 Mountain Road, in Moncton (506-858-1995), in late spring 2024, with times and dates to be announced.
Donations can be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences can be shared at http://www.fergusonsfuneralhome.com
