He was predeceased by: his parents, Guy Surrett and Dorothy Surrett (Mann); his siblings, Reid Surrett (Ontario), Richard Surrett (Petitcodiac) and Judy Davis (Moncton); and his granddaughter Lacey McGill (Moncton).

He is survived by: his wife Edna; his children, Sonya Carty (Moncton), Joanne Esser (Shediac), Troy Surrett (Toronto), James Surrett (Moncton) and James R. Surrett Jr. (Alberta); his stepsons, Brent Betts (Suzanne) and Brice Betts (Tammy); his grandchildren, Cassie Surrett (New Brunswick), Tristan Surrett (Alberta), Callie Surrett (Alberta), Matthew Betts (Alberta), Christopher Betts (Nova Scotia), Lexi Betts (New Brunswick) and Camden Betts (New Brunswick); his great grandchildren, Claire (Moncton) and Grace (Moncton); and his siblings, Florence Davis (Ontario), Verne (Ontario) and Harvey (New Brunswick).
