He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas Matheson and Mamie Matheson (Pyne); his sisters, Elizabeth Hill and Mona White; and his nephews, Brent Hill and Peter White.

He is survived by: his children, Shannon Stewart (Jake) of Blackville, NB and Scott Matheson (Catherine) of Sussex, NB; his sister Hilda Matheson of Miramichi, NB; his grandchildren, Travis, Todd, River, Roman, Leia, Abby and Meadow; his stepgrandchildren, Andrea, Austin and Alyssa; his great grandchild Shelby; his niece Charlene Dignam-Conroy (Jimmy); his nephews, Paul White, Brian Hill (Theresa) and Bruce Hill; and his sister-in-law June Dignam (Edward) of Miramichi.

As expressions of sympathy, in Sonny's memory, donations may be made to a memorial of one's choice.
