He was predeceased by: his daughter Trudy Kernighan; his brothers, Sterling (Phyllis McKibbon-Hamilton) and Donald; and his sister-in-law Phyllis Hamilton. He is survived by: his wife Winona "Winnie"; his son-in-law Mark Kernighan (Darlene Armstrong) of Saint John, NB; his sisters, Dorothy Kenny (late Joe Kenny) of Miramichi, NB and Myrna Allison (late Derell Allison) of Miramichi, NB; and his sister-in-law Susie Curtis (late John Curtis) of Miramichi, NB. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
