She was predeceased by: her parents, Chester Curtis and Cora Curtis (Sturgeon); and her husband Phillip Travis Messer. She is survived by: her daughters, Debbie Essensa (Rickey), Kathy Cole (Roger), Angela Sloan (Mark), Teresa Riley (Charles), Tammy Hanselpacker (George) and Melanie Price (Albert); and her grandchildren, Michelle, Denise, Jason, Dana, Jesse, Shawn, Philip, Amanda, Erika, Nathan, Alisha, Anna, Sarah and Noah. She is also survived by several great grandchildren.

For those who wish to make a donation in memory of Vella, the family has suggested the Turning Point Pentecostal Church in Harvey Station.
