He was predeceased by: his former wives, Alice and Shirley; his fiancée Irma; his sons, Garnet and Anthony; his grandson Damien; and his siblings, Bobby, Doreen and Sylvia "Toby".

He is survived by: his children, Juanita Gilbert (Raymond) of Grande and Kevin Sutherland (Sue-Anne) of Bruderheim, AB; his stepchildren, Rusty McArthur (Beverly) of Fredericton, NB, Marlene Pieroway of Fredericton, NB and Treena Hetherington of Fredericton, NB; his brother Ronnie Sutherland (Linda) of Belmont, NS; and his nieces, Bonnie Tabor and Judy Boyd. He is also survived by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
