He was predeceased by: his parents, William Henderson Petrie Sr. and Elizabeth Ponter; his grandson Alex Potenza; his great grandchild Euan Artus-Elston; his siblings, John (Agnes), Betty (John), Mary (Arthur), Sadie (Ray) and Williamina; his nephews, Billy Gribbon and Billy Gratwick; and his niece Maureen Carey.

He is survived by: his wife Robina Whitten; his daughters, Donna Potenza (Roberto) and Jacqueline Elston (Richard); his grandchildren, Matthew, Jennifer, Michael and Daniel; and his great grandchildren, Sierra, Vivien, Alex, Connor, Joseph and Yvette. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
