He was predeceased by: his parents, Jacob T. Loewen and Margaret Loewen (Friesen); his wife Elfrieda; his son Jacob Gerard; and his brother Wilbert (Bert).
He is survived by: his children, Barbara, Margaret, John, James and Lisa; his children-in-law, Nancy, Bob, Wendy and Joe; his sister Emmeline; his grandchildren, Emma, Nick, Andrew, Christopher, Jesse, Levi and Alexi; and his great grandchildren, Elliott, Fiona, Wesley, Jillian, Roma, Quinn and Avon.
In 2000 Mel, together with Loewen cousins in Manitoba, formed the Steinbach Campus Foundation to prepare a 60-acre campus with sites for public and private institutions of service to the community.
