He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry and Bertha (Schroeder); his son Donald; his siblings, Laura Jahnke (Gerard), Eddie Irene Blanchard (Elmer) and Ruth Mazinke; and his brother-in-law Peter Knip.

He is survived by: his wife Ina; his sons, Bruce (Lori), Raymond (Marlies) and Wayne (Dixie); his grandchildren, Jason (Jillian), Riley (Reanne), Brienna (Mike), Dylan (Britt), Amanda (Matt), Matthew (Britt), Corey (Hali), Reid (Bryanne), Hana, Logan, Jaeda and Peyton; his great grandchildren, Lyla, Sadie, Nash, Makenna, Madelyn and Bowan; his siblings, Harvey (Marian), Arthur (Denise) and Shirley Knip; and his sister-in-law Hedy Mazinke.

In Walter's memory, donations may be made to the Red River Valley Lodge or the Lutheran Church of the Cross.
