He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Horne and Olive Sewall Charles; his daughter Alexandra Keeler Charles; and his siblings, Bob, McCandless Charles and Elena Charles Riley.
He is survived by: his wife Victoria Shinkle Charles; his son Sumner Charles, Jr. (Jennifer Leydig Charles); his grandchildren, Sumner Sewall Charles, III and Walker William Charles; and his sister Eliza Charles Walton.
