He was predeceased by: his father John Pennington Cookson; his wife Doreen Patricia Cookson; and his siblings, John Alexander Shephard Cookson (Laura), William Robert Lundy Cookson and Beatrice Jean Hugh (Tom).

He is survived by: his mother Jean Elizabeth Shephard Cookson; his aunt Ann Cordingly; his children, Penny (Mario), Cate (David) and Jim; his grandchildren, Russell Bissett (Kristen), Tricia Higgins (James), Bryan Cookson and Clara Cookson; his great grandchildren, Cate, Higgins, Violet, Myles Bissett, Christine Cookson and Clara; and his cousin Gordon Drescher (Jill). He is also survived by his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and their children and many of their friends.

In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the Okanagan College Cookson Family Award, or to the Okanagan Rail Trail.
