Yao Shen (Fong) Hugh Obituary
In Loving Memory of Yao Shen Hugh
November 9, 1962 – January 11, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Yao Shen Hugh, a beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend. Yao was born on November 9, 1962, in Guangzhou, China. At the age of 18, she emigrated to Vancouver, Canada, where she built a life full of love, resilience, and generosity.
Yao is survived by her devoted husband of 35 years, Jerry Hugh, and her cherished daughter, Diana Fong, who was the light of her life. She also leaves behind her sister, Lily, who lives in Vancouver, and who shared an unbreakable bond with Yao. The two sisters spent countless afternoons together, walking through the neighborhood or enjoying tea in Yao’s beautiful garden. Her close-knit circle of friends and her longtime confidante, Mei Lin, will also deeply feel her absence.
Yao was known for her warm smile and her gentle, nurturing spirit. An avid gardener, she found joy and tranquility tending to her vibrant flowers and lush vegetables. She could often be found strolling through her neighborhood, greeting friends with kind words and sharing freshly picked produce from her garden. Her love for the simple pleasures in life inspired everyone around her.
Yao’s kindness extended beyond her family and friends. She volunteered regularly at the local food bank and was a member of the community center’s knitting circle, creating beautiful scarves and blankets for those in need.
Tragically, Yao’s life was cut short in a car accident on January 11, 2025. Her funeral was held in Guangzhou, China, a week later, where her family and childhood friends came together to honor her life.
A memorial service will also be held in Vancouver at a later date to celebrate Yao’s incredible impact on her community and loved ones. Details will be announced in the coming weeks.
Yao Shen Hugh’s life was a testament to love, kindness, and the beauty of simplicity. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
