He was predeceased by: his parents, James McKinnon and Jean McKinnon; his siblings, Alex and Helen; and his wife Jean Cook.

He is survived by: his children, Lynn Barnstead (Jim) and James (Faye); his grandchildren, Rebecca Hastings Inverness Scotland (Richard) and Chad; and his great grandchildren, Sienna, Cruz and Rio.
