He was predeceased by: his wife Sheila; his daughter Susan Smith; his grandson Steven Cooper; his brother Ken; and his sisters-in-law, Mavis and Shirley.

He is survived by: his children, Peter (Susan), Brenda and Lynne Cleksiuk (Reg); his grandchildren, Aaron (Mikaili), Brittany Kupchanko and Corbin (Payton); his great grandchildren, Tyler, Lauren, Ella and Jack; and his brother Clive.

“So sad to hear of the recent passing of Ian. He was a wonderful man and had fascinating stories to share. I met him just last year and I think I fan-girled him. I knew of his career with Search and Rescue. He was a true hero, coordinating so many searches and saving lives in the Nanaimo area. I was honoured that he showed me his special workshop, and some of his awards but he was most proud of the award given to Sheila! He said his children and Sheila made it all possible. Such a great man.”
