He was predeceased by: his wife Greta Reitsma; his siblings, Albert, Gerry, Anjo and Sandra; his granddaughter Alissa; his son-in-law Robert; and his parents, Andreas Berends and Gesina Berends (Holtman).

He is survived by: his daughters, Marilyn Sigouin, Karen Gordon (Jeff) and Sharon Allison (Evan); his grandchildren, Ryan Sigouin (Jodie), Hannah Parker (Kyle), Tyler Gordon (Dani), Joshua Allison, Brooklyn Gordon, Rebekah Homan (Brandon) and Esther Allison; his great grandchildren, Hunter Rempel, Alex Sigouin, Max Sigouin, Kayden Homan and Maycee Parker; and his brother John Berends (Hilda). He is also survived by several in-laws, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Martin can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Living Hope Missions.
