He was predeceased by: his son Jan; and his granddaughter Svantje. He is survived by: his wife Christa; his children, Hauke, Bjorn, Claudia, Tim, Dennis and Kevin; and his grandchildren, Danny, Michelle, Sheldon, Kellie, Ty, Logan and Anika.

In 2009 Herman had a stroke and several years later, developed Parkinson's and dementia.
