He was predeceased by: his parents, Charlie Thomas and Margaret Thomas (Whitehair); and his brother-in-law Cecil Allen (Doris). He is survived by: his former wife Betty Johnston of Cremona; his wife Doris Simons; his children, Kathie Reid (Richard), Greg Thomas (Cindy), Myrna Shirlaw (Ross), Kim Thomas (Francis Hancock) and Yvette Thomas; his stepchildren, Henny Simons (David Strong), Bill Simons, Richard Simons (Gerry-Ellen) and Miranda Reid (Joe); and his siblings, Kay Fischer (Clair), Betty Allen and Eric Thomas (Virginia). He is also survived by 10 grandchildren plus 22 great-grandchildren from the Thomas side; 8 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation.
