He was predeceased by: his parents, Gerben Portiek and Anna Portiek; and his brother Johan. He is survived by: his wife Femia Veronica Portiek; his daughters, Olivia (Trevor), Anita (Tom), Margo, Cindy (Shawn) and Shelley (Darren); his grandchildren, Kelsey, Megan, Sarah, Haley, Nick, Colton, Chase, Reid, Denver, Trey, Ava and Courtney; and his siblings, Hank, Riek, Lucie and Nel.

Memorial donations in his name can be made to the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre.
