He was predeceased by: his parents, Hans Schärer-Schneeberger and Gertrud Schärer-Schneeberger; his wife Johanna; and his sisters, Trudy, Freida (Kohler), Clare (Dominie), Ruth (Steudler), Elisabeth (Haussener) and Martha (Matti).

He is survived by: his children, Thomas Schaerer, Detlef Schaerer and Alexander Schaerer (Kimberley); his grandchildren, Logan Schaerer (Thomas Weir) and Emma Schaerer; and his brother Fritz.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that tribute donations be made to any facility for the care and rescue of animals.
