He was predeceased by: his brother Alex. He is survived by: his children, Ann, Stephanie and David; and his grandchildren, Dustin, Kyle and Meagan.

In recognition of his research work, he received the Researcher of the Year award from the Canadian Educational Research Association in 1976, and the Jubilee Medal for his contributions to the works of various associate committees of the National Research Council.
