He was predeceased by: his son Graeme Steven. He is survived by: his wife Edna Burness; and his sons, Gareth (Stacey) and Grenville (Monica).

He had a storied career as a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Alberta, receiving the Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977 for his contributions to engineering.
