He was predeceased by: his former wife Susan Nielson; his brother Milton Nielson; his parents, Axel Nielson and Ellen Nielson; his brother-in-law Ernie Wakariuk; and his nephew Drew Wakariuk.

He is survived by: his wife Pauline Nielson; his children, Monica Hock (Wayne) and Brent Nielson; his stepchildren, Joeline Gascoyne, Trina Peterson (Kevin), Jonathan Wilson (Kate) and Brendon Wilson (Alecia); and his siblings, June Rittammer (Fred), Howard Nielson (Renee) and Audrey Wakariuk. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren.
