He is survived by: his spouse Yeshi Beyene Gizaw; his child Ersabel Molalet Abera; his grandchildren, Zion Benyam Tilahun and Yohannes Benyam Tilahun; his siblings, Shimelis, Almaz, Yeshi, Danny, Luel, Senait, Birhanemeskel, Yonas and Hilina; his nieces, Tinbete, Hamere and Biruktawit; and his nephew Natan.
He obtained a diploma in Social Work from Mount Royal College and worked at the Salvation Army/Booth Centre/Centre of Hope, Drop-in Centre, and Peter Coyle Place of Trinity Place Foundation from 1988 to 2015.
