It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Charles Louis Moir III MD of Calgary Alberta, born in Saint Louis Missouri, who passed away on April 19th 2002, at the age of 55, leaving to mourn family and friends. Charles, a non-smoker, passed away from Lung Cancer following an illness of several years only diagnosed shortly before his death.
Charlie/Chuck was a Cardiac and Obstetrical Anesthesiologist working mainly in Vancouver and Calgary. He graduated from Princeton University and completed his Medical Degree at the University of Illinois Medical School. His Residencies were held in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and McGill in Montreal. His Fellowships were at Brigham and Women’s in Boston and The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. He maintained the highest level of education and certification of new skills throughout his career to benefit his patients and was always an inspiration of excellence to his colleagues. He was dedicated to his field and very generous with his knowledge. Charlie/Chuck had a great smile and twinkling brown eyes full of warmth and caring. He was always very enthusiastic in his approach to life, his motto was “ Carpe Diem!”. He loved spending time in nature and the mountains. He was never happier than when rambling and camping with Catriona, his wife and the love of his life or when crossing glaciers and scaling high peaks. Zorba Paster wrote a sympathy message

“Between our freshman and sophomore year of med school we took off, hitch hiking across Canada and climbing the Wallowa mountain peaks in Oregon. He was a fine guy, had a fine sense of humor, and a knack for adventure. I have fond memories of our times together. Zorba Paster”

Zorba Paster wrote a sympathy message

“Every so often I think about Chuck. He died so very young, 55 is just the beginning of the next chapter of his life. I was best friends with him in med school, having met him the first week of classes, and commiserated over the trials and tribulation of medical school in Chicago. We both went to do residency in Nova Scotia together. I returned to Madison Wisconsin to start a Family Practice, he went on to specialty care in Calgary - more to follow”

Darren Dickinson wrote a sympathy message

“I worked with Chuck at the Foothills Hospital and I quite often remember how kind he was to his patients and colleagues. Unfortunately, he was taken from us far too soon. It will be 20 years this April! The loss of Chuck has impacted my life and many tremendously. I wish I could see his smiling face again. I know it would help me and this world through a world in need of a man of integrity. Darren Dickinson”

Catherine Young Moir wrote a sympathy message

“Charlie always believed that his fate was tied to those of his immediate family and that he would follow them to a premature death. He would try to protect me by saying, “You must always be prepared to be alone.”. Each morning he looked at himself in the mirror and said, “Today is a good day to die.”. Another was, “The moment you are conceived, you begin to die.”. He believed in an afterlife where he once again, would be with his relatives from Illinois and friends from his youth. He did not smoke or drink and did not respect anyone who did. He was a scientist, non religious and very spiritual. His final quote was, “More adventures ahead.”.”
