He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry David and Amanda Jane Dowdy (Tharpe); his wife Anna Marjorie Dowdy (Adams); his son Richard Edward Dowdy Jr.; and his siblings, Floyd Ivan Dowdy and Thelma Louise Worthen.
He is survived by: his children, Nancy Sisk (Robert) of Petersburg, WV, William D. Dowdy of Linthicum Heights, MD and Brian C. Dowdy of St. Petersburg, FL; his grandchildren, Grant K Sisk (Breein) of Fairmont, WV, Morgan R Sisk (Kendall) of West Chester, PA and Shana F Hull (Matthew) of Troutville, VA; and his great grandchildren, Raegan Sisk, Olivia Sisk, Kaylen Hull, Avery Sisk, Jaxon Sisk and Beau Hull.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, the Alzheimer's Association, or the ALS Association.
