He was predeceased by: his parents, George Ess and Hilda Van Ess (Leonhardt); his wife Mavis A. Hansen; his brother Lowell Van Ess (Lucille); his nephew-in-law Dale Winkelhorst; and his daughter-in-law Rosemary Van Ess (Richard).
He is survived by: his children, Richard Van Ess, Linda Dunne (William) and Sandra Van Ess (Greg Mahan); his grandchildren, Benjamin Dunne, Jeffrey Dunne, Lane Dunne and Christina Hayenga; his nephew Dale Van Ess (Audry); and his nieces, Deborah Schmidt (David), Dawn Winkelhorst and Denise Gabrielse (Jack).
