He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward Schmidt and Viola Schmidt (Steitz); his granddaughter Amy Kwekkeboom; his parents-in-law, Victor and Bertha Metze; and his siblings-in-law, Duaine Barthels, Eileen Metze and Mary Kallenberg (Kenneth).
He is survived by: his wife Shirley Schmidt; his children, Michael Schmidt (Jeanette), Cindy Kwekkeboom (Kurt) and Mark Schmidt (Therese); his grandsons, Matthew Schmidt (Sarah), Joseph Schmidt (Adrienne), Kenneth Schmidt (Sara), Luke Kwekkeboom (Tracy), Mitchell Schmidt (Ashley), Daniel Schmidt (Crystal) and Edward Schmidt (Jessica); his sister Lorraine Barthels; and his brother-in-law Robert Metze. He is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
