He was predeceased by: his parents, Luther Curtis and Lucille Penland (Runion); his daughter Patricia Ellen Penland; his grandson Jacob Morgan; his siblings, Judith Eichorst (Donovan), Carolyn Mullins (Larry) and Bruce Penland; his parents-in-law, Willis and Eureka Winneshiek (Decorah); and his siblings-in-law, Donovan Eichorst and Ida Whitebear (Armand).

He is survived by: his wife Joyce Penland (Winneshiek) of Dekorra Township; his children, Curtis Penland, Jr. (Lynn), Debra Morgan (Donald), Deanna Penland (Norm Westphal), Michael Penland (Roxanne) and Joseph Penland (Renae); his grandchildren, Jason Beals, Aaron Kelley, Bradley Morgan (Marci Peloquin), Christopher Morgan, Tashina Penland, Dakota Penland (Alyssa), Raven Penland, Jade Penland, Dreyden Penland, Lydia Penland, Jerrod Penland, Lily Penland, Cayden Penland and Colten Penland; his granddaughter-in-law Danille Morgan; his great grandchildren, Nathan Peloquin, Issac Morgan, Eli Morgan, Sophie Morgan, Lucas Morgan, Jaxon Williams and Sylas Penland; his brother Dwight (Sharon Knight); and his siblings-in-law, Sandy Penland (Bailey), Edward Winneshiek (Phyllis BigSoldier), Anthony Winneshiek (Connie) and Dells of Wisconsin. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
