He is survived by: his children, Barbara Kaat (Mark) of Colorado, Carol Smies of Oostburg, Ron Smies (Kim) of Oostburg and Mark Smies (Lori) of Sheboygan; his grandchildren, Amanda Kaat, Adam Kaat, Joshua (Amanda), Joseph Smies (Ariana), Tye (Lia) and Shannan Smies (Alex); his great grandchildren, Andrew, EmmaKay Vu and Isabella Romero; his sister Janet Wahlstrom (Frank); and his siblings-in-law, Jack DeTroye, Allan DeBruine and Mary Blank.
