He was predeceased by: his parents, William Schmidt and Anna Schmidt (Krause); his siblings, Wallace, Sidney, Clarence, Clifford, Lloyd, Robert Schmidt, Eleanor Weinfurter (Frank), Margaret Stark (Louis) and Irma Gereaux (Bob); and his brothers-in-law, Frank Weinfurter, Louis Stark, Bob Gereau and Louis Cherney.
He is survived by: his wife Darlene F. Cherney; his children, JoAnn Lewer (David) of Marshfield, Lila Kamps (Alan) of Verona, Richard "Rick" Schmidt of Marshfield and Ranea Haight (Dan) of Fort Wayne, IN.; his grandchildren, Corey Purdy (Silvia), Rebecca, Dominic and Vincent Haight; his great grandchild Henry Purdy; his sister Betty Singstock (Don); and his parents-in-law, Charles Cherney (Ruth) and Marlene Cherney.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family who will designate a memorial at a later date.
