He was predeceased by: his parents, Roy Mathews and Shirley Mathews (Zimmerman); his brother Randy Mathews; and his close friend Larry "Ace" Johnson. He is survived by: his wife Paulette Mathews; his children, Clifford Mathews Jr. (Tarah), Christopher Mathews, Cynthia Mathews (Tom Cooper) and Timothy Mathews (Kasey McClannahan) of Apple Valley, MN.; his grandchildren, Keisha Mathews, Madalyn Coplien, Hailey Millis, Elizabeth and Alex Mathews; his sister Barbara Ann Hoyer (Gary); and his pets, Meggie and Charley.

Cliff was a selfless man and donated his eyes to two people. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
