He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward Whaley and Lorene Whaley; and his son James Whaley Jr. James. He is survived by: his wife Roberta Dean Wafford; his daughter Colleen Farbin of Chicago; his stepchildren, Cynthia Lair of Idaho, Richard Wafford of Idaho and Lois Golec of Idaho; and his sisters, Pat and Donna. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
