He was predeceased by: his parents, Ralph Lewis Rhodes and Mary Frances Bridgeman Rhodes; his brothers, Lawrence Oliver "Fuzzy" Rhodes and Ralph Sidney Rhodes; and his brother-in-law Paul Hash.

He is survived by: his wife Barbara Ann Riley; his children, James Linwood Rhodes II (Robin), Ralph William "Billy" Rhodes (Lisa) and Colette Michelle Quinn; his sisters, Peggy Hash, Thelma "Red" Ryman (Roger), Alma Sue Jerrigan (Bill) and Mary Fay Fox (Richard); and his sister-in-law Edna Rhodes.
