He was predeceased by: his parents, Ruth Douglas Hazel and Dr. John T. Hazel; his former wife Marion Virginia; his wife Anne Barnett Merrill Hazel; and his brothers, William A. Hazel and Lawrence D. Hazel.

He is survived by: his child Leigh Ann Hazel-Groux (Rick); his granddaughters, Rosemary and Margaret; his son John Tilghman Hazel, III (Michele); his granddaughters, Virginia Hazel Potter (Kevin) and Alexandra Hazel Remuzzi (James); his son James W. Hazel (Sarah); his grandchildren, James (Katelyn) and Emily; his son Richard M. Hazel (Cheryl); his grandchildren, Caroline, William (Jenna), Lucy, Mary Rose Hazel Houston (Tyler), John, Cathryn, Anne Alexander and Lane Barnett Merrill; his son William Randle Barnett Merrill (Raquel); and his great grandchildren, Alden Potter, Carter Hazel, Adeline Remuzzi, Isabella Remuzzi and Lillian Hazel.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that remembrances be made to The Grace Episcopal Church, The Plains, Virginia.
