He was predeceased by: his parents, Oscar Stuart Chaplain, Sr. and Minnie Capps Chaplain; and his sister Sally Williams. He is survived by: his daughters, Lynn Gaffey (Shane Rittenhouse), Jennifer Scharf (Shawn) and Kelly Koontz (Hugh); and his grandchildren, Shannon Gaffey (Richard Hendley), Scott Gaffey, Kyle Scharf (Kate), Sarah Scharf, Patrick Koontz and Spencer Koontz.
