He was predeceased by: his parents, Augustus "Gus" Franklin Smith and Mamie "Pauline" Smith; his brother Forbie Smith; and his son Lester Smith. He is survived by: his grandchildren, Tracy Dixon (Joshua), Dr. Teresa Saavedra (Alfredo), Thomas McDill, Ben Smith (Andrea), Natalie Burch (Chris), Aline Jester (Aaron Berg), Lauren Miller, Parker Tumelson (Allison) and Brooke Tumelson; and his great grandchildren, Delaney, Ava, Lyla, Bayer Dixon, Maximo, Alessandro Saavedra, Simon, Sidney Smith, Hunter Burch, Anela Trotter, Joy Bishop, Acadia Berg, Alaura Berg and Camryn Miller.

Beginning in 2017, Durwood began to suffer progressively from Alzheimer's Disease and recently entered hospice care before his passing.
