He was predeceased by: his parents, Lee Hess and Lena Hess; his son Michael Brandon Hess; his siblings, Lawrence Hess, Carl Hess and Wanda Holbrook; his father-in-law Baker Thomas; and his former wife Tiny Mae Hess.
He is survived by: his wife Alverta Hess; his children, Sandra Prater (Billy Jr.) of Glade Spring, VA and Bobby Hess (Terry) of Crockett, VA; his siblings, Florence Blevins of Chilhowie, VA, Margaret Granados of Chilhowie, VA, Eula Sandefur of Chilhowie, VA, Virginia Hess of Chilhowie, VA, Carol Smith (Kevin) of Blountville, TN and Robert Hess (Jan) of Chilhowie, VA; his mother-in-law Edna Thomas of Glade Spring, VA; his sister-in-law Alice Hess of Statesville, NC; and his grandchildren, Peyton, Lucas, McKendra Prater and Bobby Hess. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
