He was predeceased by: his parents, Bernard Thompson and Dorothy Minard Thompson; and his sister Karen Bourne. He is survived by: his wife Becky Thompson of Galax, Virginia; his stepchildren, Caitlin Huffman of Myrtle Beach and Justin (Kelsey Huffman) of Salem Virginia; his stepgrandson Joe Huffman; and his brother Evie Thompson of Melbourne, Florida. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
