She was loved and cherished by many people including: her parents, Benjamin Purdum and Margaret Purdum (Smith); her sisters, Eileen, Dorothy, Marion and Carol; her husband Joseph McLain Schwind; her sons, Joseph, Ted of Vienna, VA, Peter and Benjamin; her brother Tim (Milena) of Jacksonville; her sons, Joe (Samantha) of Martinsburg, WV, Matt (Darlene) of Summertown, TN and Ben of Falls Church, VA; and her grandsons, Dylan and William. She was also cherished by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mary's honor to support wounded service men and women. Suggested organizations include DAV, Gary Sinise Foundation, Fisher House and the Wounded Warrior Project.
